Evaluation of the Results of Toggle Pin or Caput and Collum Femoris Excision Arthroplasty in Cats with Coxofemoral Luxation: A Retrospective Study

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages and postoperative outcomes associated with the use of toggle pin (TP) fixation or femoral head and neck excision arthroplasty (EA) in the treatment of coxofemoral luxation in cats. Materials and Methods: Twenty cats of different breeds, sexes and ages presenting with coxofemoral luxation to the small animal clinic between 2022-2023 were evaluated. EA was the procedure of choice in 11 cases and TP was the procedure of choice in 9 cases. Results: In the EA group, 5 patients (45.4%) had no lameness at the 2-month postoperative examination and walked well. The other 4 patients (36.3%) had mild and occasional performance difficulties. In 2 cases (18.1%) there was a mild but frequent difficulty in walking. When the 12-month results of the same patients were analysed, it was found that 9 patients (81.8%) had no problem walking and only 2 patients had mild and occasional difficulty walking. In the TP group, 5 cases (55.5%) showed lameness within 4 months of surgery. No lameness was observed in 4 (44.4%) cats in the same group. EA was performed in 5 cases of reluctance. Owners reported that their cats were not restricted in activity 12 months after surgery. Conclusion: EA appears to be a rescue technique that can provide good functional results in cats that have failed other techniques. Despite the reluxation rates, the TP used in this study is a good technique that can be used to preserve the joint. The use of different materials should increase the tracking time.

Identification of Ticks Infesting Cattle in Konya Region and Investigation of the Presence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Ticks

Aim: This study was designed to identify the tick species infesting cattle in the southern region of Konya and to investigate the presence of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in these ticks. Materials and Methods: Tick samples were obtained from 60 cattle selected from 30 farms, where tick infestations were macroscopically observed in the livestock. The presence of CCHF was investigated molecularly by RT-PCR method. Ticks infesting 60 cattle from 30 farms located in the five designated study areas (Karabayır, Karacahisar, Arslantaş, Kozağaç, and Kayapınar neighborhoods) were collected. The collected ticks were identified to species. Results: A total of 117 ticks were identified, with 111 (94.87%) identified as Hyalomma marginatum, 3 (2.56%) identified as Hyalomma excavatum, and 3 (2.56%) identified as Dermacentor marginatus. In the RT-PCR analysis conducted on 35 pools of ticks (considering tick species, sex, and collection area), no presence of the CCHF virus was detected. Conclusion: The identification of the majority of the ticks in this study as Hyalomma marginatum is noteworthy. The identification of Hyalomma marginatum as the vector of the CCHF disease in Türkiye is indicative of increasing concerns. Molecular and serological evidence showing the presence of the CCHF virus in the region, albeit limited, indicates that more comprehensive studies related to the disease are necessary.

Evaluation of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Total Bacterial Load in Milk from Clinical Mastitis, Subclinical Mastitis and Healthy Cows

Aim: Studies on alternative preventive and therapeutic approaches for bovine mastitis have gained momentum in the veterinary field due to bacterial antibiotic resistance. In this study; It was aimed to determine the total bacterial counts and lactic acid bacteria counts in milk taken from lactating cows, clinical/subclinical mastitis and healthy udder lobes, compare them with the results of the California Mastitis Test, used a screening test, and determine the variability of lactic flora load in the cases. Materials and Methods: The milk samples were collected from lactating cows from fifteen farms. Udder quarters were categorized into three subgroups: non-mastitis (NM; n=35), clinical mastitis (CM; n=30), and subclinical mastitis (SCM; n=31). Total bacteria and lactic acid bacteria were counted by inoculating milk samples onto MRS (De Man Rogosa Sharpe Agar), M17 agar and PCA (Plate Count Agar) media. Results: No significant difference between the three groups regarding the logarithmic averages of MRS and M17 colony numbers were found. When evaluated using MRS and M17, no significant difference existed among the NM, SCM, and CM groups (P=0.093). Positive correlations (P=0.001) existed between the mean of PCA, CMT, MRS and M17 media. Conclusion: The total bacterial count in milk, as well as the LAB load, are affected by the growing environment and environmental conditions. The milk microbiota is altered in healthy udder quarters and clinical and subclinical mastitis cases. Further investigation is needed to understand the flora characteristics of milk in cases of bovine mastitis and healthy animals.

The Correlation between Neopterin, Myeloperoxidase and Oxidative DNA Damage in Sheep with Natural Babesiosis

Aim: The present study was designed to investigate the correlation between neopterin, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and DNA damage in sheep naturally infected with babesiosis. Materials and Methods: The study included 40 sheep Akkaraman, 1-3 years aged, with 20 healthy individuals (control group) and 20 naturally infected with babesiosis (patient group). Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein into biochemical tubes from all sheep. The cause of the disease was confirmed through smear tests and PCR analysis. Neopterin, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and oxidative DNA damage (8-OHdG) levels were measured using an ELISA method. Results: Neopterin and 8-OHdG levels were significantly lower in the control group compared to the patient group (P<0.05). Although myeloperoxidase were higher in the patient group, the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05) Conclusion: In this study, a significant increase in neopterin and oxidative DNA damage, which are indicators of an immunological response, was observed in sheep with babesiosis. Neopterin in particular can be considered as an important marker of the immunological response to babesiosis.

Surgical Treatment of Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of the Third Eyelid in a Cat

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant tumor of the eyelid in cats. It is usually seen in white-haired cats aged 10 years and older. Although various regional and systemic chemotherapy treatments have been proposed, surgical total resection of the mass is generally recognized as the most accepted treatment method. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment of eyelid SCC by surgical total resection in a cat. The study material consisted of a short-haired female grey-white stray cat that was brought to Selçuk University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Hospital, Department of Surgery on January 4, 2024 with the complaint of ulcerative tumor in the right eye. After clinical and hematologic examinations, the cat was operated for mass resection. A dose of 0.25 ml bupivacaine was injected subconjuctivally into the bulbar conjunctiva of the T-shaped cartilage, and then the conjunctival tissue from which the third eyelid originated was dissected along all its borders with dissecting scissors and total resection of the tissue was achieved. The final diagnosis of SCC was made after histopathologic examination. Postoperative detailed examination of the eye segments and ocular MR imaging revealed no pathology. In addition, according to the patient's clinical and hematologic findings and radiographic findings of the thorax, no evidence of metastasis was found. During the 1-month postoperative follow-up period, no recurrence or general condition deterioration was detected. In conclusion, we believe that surgical total resection of the third eyelid is a feasible method for the treatment of SCC originating from the third eyelid in cats.
